Sources: UNC investigating academics

North Carolina expanded the inquiry into its football program to include allegations of academic impropriety involving a former tutor writing papers for players, sources said Thursday.

The Tar Heels relegated at least nine players to the scout team on Wednesday due to the academic portion of the probe, the sources said. The group included players who were questioned as part of the NCAA's inquiry related to agents and trips to Miami.
Sources said starting defensive tackle Marvin Austin, starting defensive end Robert Quinn and starting linebacker Bruce Carter were among the players who were relegated to the scout team.
Sources said the tutor in question has also been a nanny for head coach Butch Davis' family.
North Carolina scheduled a 7:30 p.m. ET news conference to provide an update on the NCAA's investigation. Chancellor Holden Thorp, athletic director **** Baddour and Davis are all expected to attend.
The school is unlikely to announce the suspensions of any involved players at tonight's news conference.
The NCAA is involved in the academic angle of the investigation as well.
Previously, the NCAA's investigation focused on defensive lineman Marvin Austin and starting wide receiver Greg Little and their contacts with agents and trips to South Florida and California.
Two sources who were interviewed by the NCAA said that Austin has said Miami Dolphins cornerback Vontae Davis helped fund some of his expenditures to South Florida. A source close to Davis says he is good friends with Austin, but hasn't interviewed with the NCAA. The same source says Davis says he didn't pay for Austin's trips.

UNC kicks Brown, Burney off team as investigation widens

To say that things regarding the NCAA investigation in Chapel Hill heated up today would be an understatement -- Inside Carolina reported that UNC self-reported "academic issues pertaining to a tutor."

As soon as that happened, the proverbial mess hit the fan: Our own Dennis Dodd reported that the University will announce a "widening of an NCAA investigation" at the 7:30 ET news conference the school has scheduled.

That same tutor, according to reports from ESPN's Joe Schad and Inside Carolina's Greg Barnes, also (inexplicably) served as the nanny for UNC head coach Butch Davis.

A source has also told CBSSports.com that two players, cornerbacks Charles Brown and Kendrick Burney, have already been kicked off of the football team.

At this time, we cannot confirm whether or not those dismissals will be announced during Thursday night's press conference.

Additionally, the same source told CBSSports.com that "four players have been cleared and the rest are toast" -- meaning four of the defensive starters on Carolina's team.

Erin Summers of WRAL in Raleigh also reported that "it's all but four players on the starting defense who are involved in the academic infractions."

The information from our source falls right in line with the -- as yet unconfirmed -- reports that the majority of the defensive starters were removed from the first team reps during Carolina's closed practice, and that Chancellor Holden Thorp addressed the football team on the field earlier.

It is believed that Thorp, along with Davis and athletic director **** Baddour, will be present at the news conference.

As a matter of interest only in the sense of reasonable practicality, the Las Vegas betting line for the UNC-LSU game has been removed from many online gambling sites.

All I can say is that Botch is getting what he deserves. Even if he was the one that recruited the talent that brought Miami back after probation, he was also the coward who bolted on those same guys for the Browns after telling them that he had no plans to leave for the NFL.

So--eff him in the A and while I'm at it--I hope Chapel Hell gets all they deserve and then some out of this.

but this ruins UNC's season and its nobodys fault but their own. Losing 7 starters off a top 5 defense (most 1-2 round draft picks) makes them bad, really bad. They could have won the ACC and had the best D in the nation, now they will be lucky to win 6 games and make a bowl.
